Señaló que la salud se altera cuando la energía nerviosa se disipa y el cuerpo ya no es capaz de eliminar adecuadamente los subproductos tóxicos del metabolismo.
El estado resultante de la auto-intoxicación, o toxemia, fue considerado por Tilden como causa básica única de deterioro de la salud. A su juicio, cada enfermedad es un esfuerzo de la naturaleza por eliminar la toxemia, o crisis de la toxemia.
Según Tilden, la energía nerviosa podría convertirse en tóxica al consumir los alimentos equivocados, por comer en exceso, teniendo en cuenta también muchos estimulantes como el café y el alcohol, y también por otras fuentes de estrés, tales como tensiones emocionales y mentales.
En 1910 comenzó a publicar una revista mensual llamada The Stuffed Club, que continuó hasta 1915 cuando cambió el nombre por el de Philosophy of Health, y que pasó a llamarse más tarde, en 1926, Health Review and Critique
